Racy.

On the weekend I escaped from Hobart and my usual housewifely duties. My mum came down and assumed my post.....going far beyond the call of duty as during the course of the weekend she even had to navigate an Irish Dancing Competition and all of the carry on that goes along with it. And that was only for one child on one day.....there were birthday parties and playdates for two of the others and naps, serious supervision and time strapped into the pram for the baby. Thanks again, mum.

So instead of the usual rush around between sailing and dancing on Saturday we entered a parallel universe which was Flemington Racecourse on Derby Day:

It involved a lot of preparation. We started on the Vitamin B on the Monday before. Look at the miracle worked on my gardener's hands....gel tips with a French Polish rendered them almost unrecognisable:

They lasted perfectly until yesterday.....when I broke one off on the child lock on the bathroom cupboard.

Before we went to the track I got a do at  The Blowout Bar in Toorak.....and had my first glass of champagne:

It is fabulous there. I wish that we had one in Hobart and that my lifestyle included this kind of behaviour on a regular basis.....unfortunately it doesn't.

Once we got to Flemington, there was lots of this out in The Nursery:

Is there anything more hedonistically decadent than drinking champagne while the sun shines.....OK, maybe don't incriminate yourself by answering this!

I rendezvoused with some old friends:

One of whom may have made it home to where she was staying later that night via the dog flap in the back door.

And I met a new friend when I caught up with the lovely JMac in the Birdcage. I love reading her regular comments on my blog.....it was a surreal but really nice experience meeting her in person.....we didn't stop chatting.

Look how gorgeous the flowers at Flemington were:

On Sunday, because we live in Hobart and don't have Ikea....we made a pilgrimage. To buy light fittings for houses we are building:

And then we paid a visit to another Larder....The Richmond Hill Cafe and Larder where we had a late lunch:

And of course my husband let me eat cake:

And I did...except that it wasn't really a cake but a macadamia ice cream bombe and it was DELICIOUS.

I loved every single second of our weekend away. Now.....I've got to go and check that the baby isn't scribbling on the wall with a texta, referee a bicker between the boys and get the dinner on. Sigh.

Rx

PS An extra big thank you to Heidi at Adelaide Villa and The Farmer's Wife for their suggestion to substitute the existing belt on the dress that I wore with a thick black ribbon....it made the outfit!

PPS And and even bigger thank you to everybody who made kind comments on my last post and restored my whole faith in the blogging process.

  1. So glad you had a brilliant time. Am exceptionally jealous. You looked stunning.

Please tell me it was Janey that did the dog flap trick ;)

I hope your troll is punished for being such a miserable so and so by developing ugly wrinkles.

    Keep drinking champagne.

    1. Of course it was and I spent all day Sunday in fits of hysterical laughter....apart from when I was worried about how we would tell her husband if she happened to choke on her own vomit!

      I love champagne. Rx

  3. You look Stunning Romy! What a fabulous weekend (aside from the trip to Ikea, which was always my form of personal hell on a weekend). It's always nice to have a weekend child free, but extra nice to be doing something so fun. Hope you had a good Cup day as well. xx

    1. Thanks Heidi, it was utterly utter! The trip to Ikea had to be done and I must admit to excitement....when I voiced this emotion my husband told me that I needed to get out more.....I agree! Cup day very low key....I went and had my broken fingernail fixed. Rx

  4. What a fabulous weekend! So glad you had a ball. You looked absolutely gorgeous and I'm particularly envious of your nails.

Gosh, have just read your last Post and I too am in stitches over the reference to "LL" and glad you found it funny too. Having met you in real life, that description couldn't be further from the truth as you are the sweetest, most thoughtful person and in any event very slim and healthy.

Better get myself off the couch and continue with dinner too :-)

    1. Thanks Mel, I am enraptured with my nails and they promise they should last for three weeks....I'm sceptical! Must admit to shock and amusement about LL comment.....let's face it it would be easy to acquire one! Rx

  5. Fab weekend... and fab hattery. Next year I'll get involved and dust off the hat and head to the blowout bar. Such a great idea. So NYC.

Ikea is five minutes from me so I go often but duck in through all the shortcuts sans husband. He loathes even the idea of it.

  6. oh Romy, what a marvellous weekend away! I am completely envious as well. Love the photo of you and your girlfriends! Clearly, we have like minded friends as one of my lovely friends once entered her home through the dog door after a rather messy night out as well! xx

    1. Marvellous! Let's just say that the dog in question was a German Shepherd and not a tiny fluffy thing....I wish someone had seen it and captured it for posterity! Rx

  7. I loved meeting you and your husband Romy! Particularly in such a fun environment so different to our everyday lives. You looked gorgeous. Wasn't it all just brilliant?! I had the BEST time. In the words of FF the people watching was 11/10. Not to mention the champas, flowers, food, fashion. I wish i could go back and do it all again. Can't believe you trekked to ikea - excellent commitment. I was absolutely good for nothing but a flight home post race day!

    1. So lovely meeting you and your husband too! What a bizarre world we live in where our paths managed to collide.....at Derby Day in Melbourne when we usually live at the furthest extremities of the country! You are right, it was the best fun. Rx

  8. Your hat is fabulous so I hope you don't worry about the nasty comments you received. I've had one too and it wasn't fun but all you can do is keep your head high! Flemington looks fantastic - unfortunately I only got to watch on TV :) xx

  14. I wasn't in the mood to celebrate MC this year, a girlfriend and I shared a lovely seafood platter overlooking the ocean in a quiet local instead but I really enjoyed reading your post. You looked stunning....no one could ever guess the military organisational skills required for your weekend 'off duty!'. So glad you enjoyed it so much. A well deserved break from normality! Thank God for Mums!
